In her new essay collection, Mother: Can You Not?, Kate Siegel shares the laugh-out-loud stories behind @CrazyJewishMom – her viral hit on Instagram, where over 800K people eagerly follow her outrageous daily text exchanges with her mother Kim. Join us Wednesday, May 4th at 7 p.m. for an extremely funny introduction to this mother-daughter duo, moderated by Morgan Shanahan, followed by a signing.
There is nothing more wonderful—or more annoying—than a mother’s love. Just ask Kate Siegel. Her own mother drove her so crazy she decided to broadcast their hysterical conversations. Before long, hundreds of thousands of followers were witnessing her mother Kim sending Spanx to Kate’s office and making up a song about kegels to the tune of Ke$ha’s “TiK ToK.” Kim loves her daughter and wants her to be happy – her concerns just happen to manifest themselves in dozens of texts a day, ranging from advice about using bronzing lotion (“Blinded by the light, more like BLINDED BY KATE’S CALVES”) to pleas for Kate to freeze her eggs before it’s too late. In Mother, Can You Not?, Kate reveals what it’s really like to be on the receiving end of this particular blend of unconditional love, withering sarcasm, and bizarre neuroses. She recounts the early adventures that form their mother-daughter dynamic, from befriending strippers to stalking college admissions officers and we find out how together they became a media sensation, featured everywhere from BuzzFeed to Nightline.
