Independent Bookstore Day Celebrates independent bookstores nationwide on Saturday, April 30th, with literary parties around the country.
Independent bookstores are worth holding a day long, nation-wide party for. And at Chevalier’s we’ve been preparing for the festivities for 76 years! We are cultural hubs, watering holes for thirsty imaginations, a place where we might rub elbows with the literati or witness children raptly listening to a story, where we happen upon new ideas and discoveries, bump into old friends and make new ones — some fictional, others, our neighbors. In these virtual-reality times, the indie bookstore remains an open public space where we are free to contemplate, commune and cross-pollinate. Come buzz in our book patch on Saturday, April 30th.
Come join us as we celebrate the day with amazing musicians, in-store visits by local authors, delightful giveaways such as FREE, removable literary tattoos and day-only offers of limited editions by the likes of Kate DiCamillo and Neil Gaiman.
Starting at 10:30 a.m. novelist Julia Claiborne Johnson, Be Frank With Me, and young adult author Charlotte Huang, For the Record, our honorary in-house authors for the day, will be available to share their tastes and knowledge with you. You can catch Julia up until 2:30 p.m. and Charlotte until 12:30 p.m.
Top off the Celebrations With Music at 4:30 p.m.
One-of-a-kind Los Angeles multi-instrumentalist Julia Holter will perform songs from her new album Have You In My Wilderness, featured here on NPR. Julia has performed at venues and festivals all over the globe. She has had pieces commissioned by and/or has performed with ensembles such as the Los Angeles Philharmonic and Stargaze. She says she becomes another character when she writes, and she often draws inspiration for her songs from literature and plays.
Julia’s father and Chevalier’s co-owner Darryl Holter, co-author of Woody Guthrie LA, 1937-1941, will treat us to his original taste of Americana from his latest album, Radio Songs, which draws from country, blues and folk traditions.
All day we are offering FREE temporary literary tattoos and other exclusive, day-of, merchandise. These items are limited to a first come first served offer, so arrive early!
