Rich Ferguson’s story eclipses the hero’s journey and gives us instead a real boy’s passage into actual, fumbling adulthood, all set to a red hot soundtrack that includes The Clash, Black Sabbath, Nazareth, REM, and of course, The Boss himself. Come soak up a glorious earful with another Joisey boy-turned-visionary and enjoy his hardscrabble coming-of-age fictional ballad, on Thursday, September 15th, star-studded readings from the novel, featuring Rob Roberge, CLS Ferguson, Patrick O’Neil, Brad Listi, Antonia Crane & Seth Fischer, with a signing to follow. Note: Jersey-themed snacks and bevs shall be on offer.

New Jersey Me CoverIf you want to read a searing account of a hero’s reckoning with a devastating childhood and subsequent redemptive wrenching from a hellish American hamlet, this is not your book. This is no Bastard Out of Carolina, it’s more like Accident Awash in Blackwater – the narrator’s hometown near the New Jersey shore. If Huck Finn had to exchange the Mississippi for a nuclear facility’s run-off creek and his BFF Tom Sawyer was a sexually ambiguous basement-dwelling Italian kid with a passion for bongs, Tolkien and Stevie Nicks what adventures would they have? Poet and musician Rich Ferguson delivers the answers and then some with downhome wit, plainspoken insight and a goofy, revelatory lyricism rendered into true poetry by its earthbound origins in the “Armpit of America” in his brilliantly buoyant debut novel.

“An incredibly powerful debut. Ferguson creates a world unlike any you have ever read. This is raw, powerfully moving, darkly funny, and original. The full throttle prose is lapidary in its precision, and unique in its execution. A stunning novel.” —Rob Roberge, author of Liar: A Memoir

RichFerg_0098Pushcart-nominated poet Rich Ferguson has shared the stage with Patti Smith, Wanda Coleman, Exene Cervenka, T.C. Boyle, Jerry Stahl, Bob Holman, Loudon Wainwright and many others. (sequel to the double Grammy-nominated film 1 Giant Leap), featuring Michael Stipe, Michael Franti, k.d. lang, Krishna Das, and others.  His works have been widely anthologized and published in the LA TIMES, spotlighted on PBS (Egg: The Art Show), and he was a winner in Opium Magazine’s Literary Death Match, LA. His poetry collection 8th & Agony  is published by L.A.’s Punk Hostage Press.
