“All Lit Up” is a collaborative effort lovingly orchestrated under the aegis of our owners, Bert Deixler and Darryl Holter, in tandem with host-authors Rich Ferguson and Stephanie Barbé Hammer, and Chevalier’s Liz Newstat. Every month we offer delectable morsels from literary artists and musicians, served between convivial mixing, and garnished with a light selection of open mic surprises. Shimmer the evening away with the gleaming words of Joe Donnelly and Zoë Ruiz , the lustrous poetry of Tony Barnstone, and the sparkling tunes of Heather Donavon & Steve McCormick.
Joe Donnelly is an award-winning journalist, editor and writer. His short story, Bonus Baby, was selected for the prestigious O. Henry Prize Stories as one of the 20 best short stories of the year. O. Henry Prize Stories 2016 will be available at Chevalier’s. In his past life he was the deputy editor of the LA Weekly and the co-founder/editor of Slake: Los Angeles. Donnelly is currently a Visiting Assistant Professor of English at Whittier College.
Tony Barnstone teaches at Whittier College and is the author of 18 books and a music CD. His books of poetry include Pulp Sonnets; Beast in the Apartment; Tongue of War: From Pearl Harbor to Nagasaki; The Golem of Los Angeles; Sad Jazz: Sonnets; and Impure. He is also a distinguished translator of Chinese literature. Awards: Poets Prize, Strokestown International, Pushcart, John Ciardi Prize, Benjamin Saltman Award, NEA, NEH, and California Arts Council.
Zoë Ruiz lives and writes in Los Angeles. Her writing has appeared or is forthcoming in The Weeklings, Salon, The Rumpus, Two Serious Ladies, and the anthologies California Prose Directory and Rooted. She is also a freelance books editor and publicist and has worked for Kaya Press, Phoneme Press, and Writ Large Press. Steve McCormick has just released his 6th studio album, Stars and Chandeliers. He has produced countless albums; Phil Cody, Michael Sherwood, Tim O’Gara and Heather Donavon to name a few. He’s collaborated with such notable artists as Stan Behrens (Canned Heat, Willie Dixon), Eric Lynn (Shangri La Studios), Richie Hayward (Little Feat) and Pete Wasner (Vince Gill, Lowell George).
Award-winning songwriter Heather Donavon‘s vocals are featured on Melody Gardot’s Grammy nominated album, Currency of Man, and on Keb’ Mo’s Grammy nominated album, The Reflection. Her songwriting has been featured on Keb’ Mo’s Grammy nominated album, Blues Americana, and That Hot Pink Blues Album. Heather is writing and recording new songs with Steve McCormick for their duo project , slated to release in 2017.
